Why Pets Don't Make Good Christmas Gifts
Thinking of getting a cute puppy or kitten as a Christmas gift?  Please think twice....these cute furballs grow up into 10 and 20-year time commitments!  Remember, pets are living, breathing beings, they are not items that can be tossed aside when the receiver tires of them.

Foster Homes Urgently Needed!
RCHS has an immediate need for foster homes.  Many homeless dogs and cats in the Manhattan community are euthanized due to a lack of space.  While RCHS is a no-kill organization, we work with several local shelters who are not and are forced to euthanize animals when there just isn't enough room to house them.  The more foster homes RCHS can provide, the more animals we can provide a temporary home for before their life is cut short.  As a state-licensed foster home for RCHS, you will be provided with the supplies you need to care for your foster pet.  RCHS also provides all veterinary care and food.  All that we ask our fosters to provide is love and time.  Won't you open up your heart and home to help a dog or cat in need?  If so, please contact us at rchshumane@yahoo.com

Lost your pet?  Found a pet?

If you have lost your pet, we can list their information on our website.  Or, if you have found a pet that you suspect is lost, please check our lost pet listings.  Click here for more information.

Featured Foster of the Month!

November Star is a beautiful German Shorthair Pointer.  She came to RCHS very pregnant and soon after gave birth to five healthy puppies.  All of her puppies have found forever homes, but November Star is still waiting for hers.  She is a great girl who thinks she is a lap dog because she loves to share the recliner with her foster parent.  November is fond of almost all dog toys, but her favorite is Nylabones.   She gets along great with other dogs, cats, and kids.  November is a pleasant, well-mannered dog who is easy to be around.  She is spayed, up-to-date on shots, crate-trained, and house-trained.  If you are interested in adopting November Star, please contact us at rchshumane@yahoo.com

Great news for Walker!  He's got wheels!!

Several months ago RCHS took in Walker, a boxer puppy who was born paralyzed.  Walker has control of his bodily functions, so he can go to the bathroom on his own, he just can't move his back legs the way he should.  This little guy had such a passion for life that we decided to do what we could to give him a second change.  Thanks to Ron Jackson, a friend of RCHS, Walker had a cart custom built just for him.

We want to thank everyone who has helped Walker, by donating funds or by thinking of and caring for him.  Walker has his wheels now and is learning how to go through life a little easier.  It's going to take some time for him to develop strength in some specific areas of his arms.  Until recently he lived his life pulling his body across the floor, rather than using them to stand or walk.  Right now Walker only spends 1-3 hours in his cart, but he's using that time to learn how to get around.  At first he was scared and unsure of the cart, and spent most of his time just sitting in it.  Lately he has become much more comfortable and is now rolling across and around the room.  It will take a little longer for him to be able to maneuver around corners, through doorways, or move in reverse, but he is happy to be able to live life a few inches up off the ground.  Walker is the same outgoing, smiling boy, and thanks to his cart he's able to get around without hopping everywhere.

Keep an eye out for a video update of Walker in his cart!

RCHS is very thankful for the gift of Walker's cart, however, his veterinary bills were very expensive.  If you would like to make a donation to help Walker, you may do so by clicking the "Just Give" button on the left side of this web page.  Or, you can mail a donation to:

"Walker's Fund"
c/o Riley County Humane Society
P.O. Box 1202
Manhattan, KS 66505-1202

Walker will be available for adoption to the right home.  His cart will stay with him.  If you are interested in adopting him please contact us, rchshumane@yahoo.com
